God’s Country: The Faithful Sunbelt

One of the most important recent books published in American religious history is Darren Dochuk’s From Bible Belt to Sunbelt: Plain-Folk Religion, Grassroots Politics, and the Rise of Evangelical Conservatism (Norton, 2010). My review of Dochuk’s book, titled “God’s Country: The Faithful Sunbelt,” has been published in the Summer 2011 issue of The City. The journal, sponsored by Houston Baptist University, is available online. You can find my review on pages 76-80. If you are interested in the relationship between evangelicals and politics, I hope you’ll read my review and, more importantly, read Dochuk’s excellent book. Even if you aren’t interested in evangelical political engagement, I’d highly encourage you to read The City. In my opinion, The City ranks alongside Touchstone and First Things as essential reading for any Christian who cares about the relationship between faith and culture.
